BRIL BARRETT RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Untitled design (2).png

Twelve dancers ages 18–30 from across Canada will be selected to participate in an intensive residency culminating in a performance as part of Mr. Barrett’s set at TITDF 2026 on August 21.

In preparation for this performance opportunity, residency dancers will work with TITDF Artistic Director Allison Toffan during the first week of the residency prior to Bril’s arrival. This year’s residency is deeply rooted in improvisation. Under Allison’s direction, dancers will collaborate, explore and investigate musical phrasing drawn from a specific album that serves as the foundation for Bril’s festival set. Through this process, dancers will develop a strong understanding of and relationship to the music before entering the studio with Bril, who will then direct and shape the material developed throughout the residency while also setting choreography to be included in the final performance.

The fundamental objective of this residency program is professional development: learning repertoire through oral tradition; strengthening musicianship; cultivating artistic authenticity through improvisation; observing Mr. Barrett’s creative process in shaping a live performance set; receiving feedback and asking questions; and building community through meaningful relationships with fellow residency participants, guidance from Allison, and artistic mentorship from Bril.

EXPECTATIONS:

-dancers are required to be in Toronto from August 9 - 22, 2026.

-dancers are required to be available and present for all rehearsals for the duration of residency program dates, plus potential additional band and tech/dress rehearsal hours on Wednesday August 19, and Thursday August 20 (time TBD).

-dancers must arrive at each rehearsal with a clear understanding of the previous rehearsal’s content.

-dancers may be asked to develop solo work as well as collaborative assignments (in placed duo/trios) on their own time outside of allotted residency rehearsal hours.

-residency dancers will not receive discounts on any festival masterclasses, workshops, or tickets for additional festival shows.
